CSV Column Extractor
Paste a CSV or TSV export and keep only the columns you need - no spreadsheet app and no upload.
About CSV Column Extractor
Paste a CSV or TSV export and keep only the columns you need - no spreadsheet app and no upload. Auto-detect comma, semicolon, tab, or pipe delimiters, tick the fields to keep, then copy or download the slimmed file. Handy when a CRM dump has fifty columns and you only need email and id. Pair it with the JSON to CSV Converter when your source is JSON, or Sort Text Lines after you extract a single column.
How to Use CSV Column Extractor
- Paste CSV or TSV into the input (or load the sample). First row is treated as headers by default.
- Pick Auto or lock the delimiter to comma, semicolon, tab, or pipe.
- Tick the columns to keep. Use Select all or Select none as needed.
- Optionally change the output delimiter, drop the header row, or add an Excel UTF-8 BOM.
- Copy the result or download extracted-columns.csv. Nothing leaves this tab.
CSV Column Extractor Examples
Keep id and email only
From a user export with id, name, email, city, active - select id and email to get a two-column list for imports or mail merges.
TSV from a spreadsheet paste
Paste tab-separated values from Excel or Sheets. Auto-detect picks tab; output can stay TSV or switch to comma CSV.
Reorder columns
Select email then id so the output header order is email,id even if the source listed id first.
Headerless data rows
Turn off First row is header to label columns as Column 1, Column 2, then pick by position.
Quoted fields with commas
RFC 4180 quotes are preserved - a name like Ada, Countess stays one cell when you extract that column.
Common Use Cases
- Trimming wide CRM or analytics CSV exports before sharing
- Pulling one column (emails, SKUs, IDs) into a plain list
- Converting TSV paste from Excel into a smaller CSV
- Reordering columns for an importer that expects a fixed layout
- Stripping PII columns before sending a file to a vendor
Frequently Asked Questions about CSV Column Extractor
- Does this upload my CSV?
- No. Parsing and extraction run only in your browser. There is no server upload for this tool.
- What delimiters are supported?
- Comma, semicolon, tab, and pipe. Auto mode counts separators in the first part of the paste and picks the most common one.
- Can I extract columns without a header row?
- Yes. Turn off First row is header. Columns are labeled Column 1, Column 2, and so on so you can still pick by position.
- What if two columns have the same name?
- Duplicates are shown as name and name (2) so you can tell them apart. Blank headers become Column N.
- Can I change the output to TSV?
- Yes. Set Output delimiter to Tab (or another option). Same keeps whatever delimiter was detected or selected for the input.
- Why is there an Excel BOM option?
- Some versions of Excel need a UTF-8 BOM at the start of the file to open accented characters correctly. Leave it off unless you need that.
- How is this different from the JSON to CSV Converter?
- JSON to CSV turns JSON into CSV (and back). This tool starts from CSV or TSV and keeps a subset of columns. Use them together when your pipeline mixes both formats.
