Image Compressor

Compress a photo or screenshot in your browser and download JPEG, PNG, or WebP - no account and no upload.

About Image Compressor

Compress a photo or screenshot in your browser and download JPEG, PNG, or WebP - no account and no upload. Pick quality (JPEG/WebP), cap the longest edge, and compare original vs compressed size before you save. Canvas encoding stays on this device, so product shots and invoices never leave your machine. Pair it with the Image to Base64 Converter when you need an embed, or the Pixels to Inches Converter when print size matters.

How to Use Image Compressor

  1. Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, or BMP (max 8 MB) or paste a screenshot. The file is read locally - nothing is uploaded.
  2. Choose JPEG for photos, WebP for a smaller modern file, or PNG when you need lossless graphics.
  3. Set quality (10-100) for JPEG/WebP. PNG ignores quality because it is lossless. Lower quality usually means a smaller file.
  4. Set max dimension in pixels to scale the longest edge (0 keeps the original width and height). Default is 1920.
  5. Compare before/after size and preview, then download the compressed file. Confirm in DevTools Network that compressing does not create a request.

Image Compressor Examples

Hero photo for a landing page

Drop a 4000 px JPEG, keep JPEG output, quality 75, max dimension 1920. Typical result is a much smaller file that still looks sharp on a 1080p hero.

Screenshot with UI chrome

Paste a PNG screenshot, switch output to WebP, quality 80, max dimension 1600. WebP often beats PNG on screenshots with large flat regions.

Icon that must stay lossless

Upload a small PNG icon, keep PNG, max dimension 0. Quality is ignored. Use this when you only want to re-encode, not lose edges.

Phone photo with transparency flattened

A PNG with a transparent background exported as JPEG fills empty pixels with white so email clients do not show checkerboards.

Then embed as Base64

Compress first, download, then open the Image to Base64 Converter. Smaller binaries mean smaller data URLs for CSS or email.

Common Use Cases

  • Shrink hero and blog images before CMS upload
  • Prepare WebP assets for static sites
  • Cap longest edge for social and Open Graph images
  • Reduce JPEG size for email attachments
  • Local compression when you cannot send files to an online optimizer

Frequently Asked Questions about Image Compressor

How do I compress an image without uploading it?
Drop or paste the file, pick JPEG, PNG, or WebP, set quality and max dimension, then download. Encoding uses the Canvas API in your browser - there is no upload endpoint.
Which format should I choose?
JPEG is best for photos. WebP is usually smaller at similar quality when the browser can encode it. PNG is lossless and may grow after a Canvas round-trip - use it for icons, screenshots with text, or when you need a transparent background.
Why did my PNG get larger?
Canvas PNG re-encoding does not keep the original encoder settings. Photos saved as PNG often shrink more as JPEG or WebP. If the stats show growth, switch format or lower quality.
Does quality work on PNG?
No. PNG from Canvas is lossless, so the slider is disabled. Use JPEG or WebP when you want a quality vs size tradeoff.
What does max dimension do?
It caps the longest edge in pixels and keeps aspect ratio. 1920 is a common web width. Set 0 to keep the original width and height and only change format or JPEG/WebP quality.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. FileReader and Canvas run only in this tab. Safe for invoices, IDs, and unreleased product shots. Verify in DevTools Network while you compress.
