GPA Calculator

Add courses with credits and grades to get term GPA - optionally fold in your previous GPA for a cumulative total.

About GPA Calculator

Use this free GPA calculator to turn each course into credit-weighted grade points. Enter letter grades or percent scores, choose a 4.0 scale (A+ = 4.0) or 4.3 A+ scale, and read term GPA, total credits, and quality points as you type. Optionally add your previous GPA and credits earned to see the new cumulative GPA - the same math registrars use when a term is posted. Everything runs in your browser. For plain percent-of math, try the Percentage Calculator.

How to Use GPA Calculator

  1. Choose the 4.0 or 4.3 A+ scale that matches your school handbook.
  2. Pick letter grades or percent scores, then enter credits for each course.
  3. Add or remove rows until the term list matches your schedule.
  4. Optional: turn on cumulative mode and enter previous GPA + credits from your transcript.
  5. Copy the term GPA (and cumulative GPA when enabled) when you need the numbers elsewhere.

GPA Calculator Formula

Term GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits). Grade points use a US 4.0 table (A/A+ = 4.0 or A+ = 4.3; A- = 3.7; B+ = 3.3; …; F = 0). Cumulative GPA = (previous GPA × previous credits + term quality points) ÷ (previous credits + term credits). Example: A in 3 credits and B in 4 credits → (12 + 12) ÷ 7 ≈ 3.429.

GPA Calculator Examples

Typical college semester

3-credit A, 3-credit B+, and 4-credit A- on a 4.0 scale → quality points 25.6 over 7 credits → GPA about 3.657.

Worked 4.0 formula

English A (3), Biology B+ (4), History A- (3), Math C (3): (12 + 13.2 + 11.1 + 6) ÷ 13 = 42.3 ÷ 13 = 3.254 GPA.

Percent to letter

95% maps to A, 88% to B+, 72% to C- - then the same credit weighting applies.

Cumulative update

Previous 3.40 over 30 credits plus a 3.429 term over 7 credits → (102 + 24) ÷ 37 ≈ 3.405 cumulative GPA.

Common Use Cases

  • Estimate semester GPA before finals post
  • Update cumulative GPA after a new term
  • Convert percent scores to letters then GPA
  • Compare 4.0 vs 4.3 A+ policies side by side
  • Check credit-weighted averages before adding or dropping a class
  • Verify portal math with quality points you can recompute by hand

Frequently Asked Questions about GPA Calculator

How do I calculate GPA?
Convert each letter to grade points, multiply by that course's credits (quality points), add every course, then divide by total credits. Example: A (4.0) × 3 + B (3.0) × 4 = 24 quality points over 7 credits → GPA ≈ 3.429. This GPA calculator does that live for every row.
What letter grade points do you use?
Standard US plus/minus bands: A and A+ = 4.0 on the 4.0 scale (or A+ = 4.3 on the alternate scale), A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, F = 0. Always confirm against your registrar - some schools omit +/- grades.
How do I calculate cumulative GPA?
You cannot average two GPAs. Multiply previous GPA by previous credits, add this term's quality points, then divide by previous credits plus this term's credits. Enable Add to cumulative GPA and enter both transcript numbers to see the result beside term GPA.
Is this weighted or unweighted GPA?
Courses are always credit-weighted (a 4-credit A moves GPA more than a 1-credit A). That is the usual college meaning of weighted by credits. This tool does not add separate Honors/AP/IB boosts - if your high school adds 0.5 or 1.0 for those levels, adjust the letter points to match your handbook first.
Can I enter percents instead of letters?
Yes. Percent mode maps common US bands (97+ → A+, 93-96 → A, 90-92 → A-, and so on down to below 60 → F), then applies the same credit weighting.
Does this store my grades?
No. The GPA Calculator runs entirely in your browser. Grades and credits are not uploaded or saved on a server.
