A pixel is a count, not a length. 1920 pixels across a screen is not the same physical width as 1920 pixels on a print file. To convert pixels to centimeters you must pick a DPI (dots per inch). The pixels-to-cm formula

Pixels convert to inches first, then inches convert to centimeters. One inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so the two steps collapse into one formula.

Formula

cm = (pixels / DPI) x 2.54. Equivalent forms: inches = pixels / DPI, then cm = inches x 2.54. Going the other way: pixels = (cm / 2.54) x DPI.

DPI (or PPI on screens) is how many pixels sit in one linear inch. A higher DPI packs the same pixel count into a smaller physical space. That is why a 300 DPI print of 1920x1080 is much smaller - and sharper - than the same resolution shown at 96 DPI on a monitor mockup.

Worked examples at 300 DPI (print)

Print work needs a much higher density. 300 DPI is the usual target for crisp photos and graphics. At that density, a 1920x1080 file covers far less paper:

  • Width: (1920 / 300) x 2.54 = 6.4 x 2.54 = 16.256 cm (about 16.26 cm)
  • Height: (1080 / 300) x 2.54 = 3.6 x 2.54 = 9.144 cm (about 9.14 cm)
  • Full frame: 16.26 x 9.14 cm

That is why a screenshot that looks large on a monitor can print small. 1920x1080 does not contain enough pixels to fill an A4 sheet (21.0 x 29.7 cm) at 300 DPI without scaling up and looking soft.

Phones and vertical video use 1080x1920, which is 1920x1080 rotated. Width and height swap, so at 96 DPI it is 28.58 x 50.8 cm and at 300 DPI it is 9.14 x 16.26 cm. CSS centimeters vs printed centimeters

In CSS, 1in is defined as 96px, so 1cm is 96 / 2.54, about 37.80 CSS pixels. That is a reference unit for layout, not a promise that 1cm in CSS will measure 1 cm on every monitor. Real screens have their own PPI. Printed centimeters are physical: they match a ruler when the file is output at the DPI you used in the formula.
